Through all time knowledge has been sought after, education valued and discoveries have propelled the development of civilizations. Dennis Diderot once stated that “There are three principal means of acquiring knowledge... observation of nature, reflection, and experimentation. Observation collects facts; reflection combines them; experimentation verifies the result of that combination.” All in all, these three principal means constitute a true education which should include learning, practicing and researching. My higher education has taken place at the Los Angeles Pierce College and will now be continuing at California State University of Northridge (CSUN). My community college education has allowed me to attain a great yet limited education; there was an absence of biological research, but through an extended biomedical research at CSUN called BUILD PODER I was able to complete my first year of research. This program informed me that REU summer internships were available and that I should apply. This changed everything; I developed an intense interest in marine organisms after my organismal biology course the previous semester. My new interest evolved into a desire to be immersed in marine biology. I wanted to learn more, to gain more knowledge to decide what specific biology major I want to pursue. I got accepted to the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology Research, Research Experience for Undergraduates to intern for Dr. von Dassow. This internship has allowed me to experience and learn about organisms spanning from sand dollars to starfish, sea urchins, and a myriad of jellyfish species. According to Immanuel Kant’s beliefs knowledge begins with experience and I know I have started achieving that. The techniques we have learned include microinjecting, growing cultures, confocal microscopy and more. I am excited to learn more and get more involved in my own research project. A possible research project for me would be studying the effect of the eggs’ sizes in these various organisms’ development and functioning. I also want to develop true friendships and connections with the faculty and my peers in the rest of the program. In this first week at OIMB I have gained a new and meaningful experience that has truly allowed me to widen my knowledge and absorb comprehensive facts about marine life.
