Hello everyone! My name is Nancy Torres and I was born and raised in southern California. I enjoy hiking, art/writing, people, and generally living life to the fullest. The world is a fascinating place, an intricate web of systems that are all in some way connected to one another. I aim to understand all I can about these systems to apply this knowledge towards helping better the natural world.
I am currently working towards attaining a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Environmental Studies from UC Santa Barbara. Living in this beautiful campus located right by the coast, near a mountainous landscape, and in a region filled with a large range of flora and fauna sparked my interest in all things environmental. I have grown to fully appreciate the natural world and now have a passion to protect it as best as I can. I found a way to do this through expanding the knowledge that we have on the environment around us. Living so close to the coast for the past 4 years has driven my passion specifically towards the marine sciences. Fortunately, I was able to undergo my first research project studying chemical oceanography in my third year at UC Santa Barbara. This experience confirmed my interest in the research process and encouraged me to seek out new opportunities to continue doing so.
This eventually led me to the OIMB REU where I am excited to be working with Alan Shanks on biological oceanography. Already in my first week here, I am learning so much from him about the dynamic, marine communities that reside in western Oregon. I look forward to embarking on my own project under his guidance, gaining new research/technical skills, exploring a new place outside of California, and simply growing as a person both personally and professionally. If I am being honest, I am still unsure of the specific endpoint of my marine science career. As of now, I am going with the flow (pun unintended) and simply following my general curiosity of the marine realm to see where it takes me.
